Strategic Digital Transformation in the Management of Telecommunications and Informatics Business

Introduction: A New Era of Digital Transformation in Telecommunications

The telecommunications and informatics industry is entering a new phase marked by massive digital transformation. The shift from conventional voice services to an integrated digital ecosystem is driving every telecommunications company to restructure their business strategies. According to Panjaitan et al. (2021) in the Telkom University Journal of Management, digital transformation is not merely the adoption of new technologies, but a fundamental change in business models, operational processes, and organizational culture.

Definition and Scope of Digital Transformation

Digital transformation in the telecommunications context covers three main dimensions: network infrastructure digitalization, service model transformation, and customer experience changes. Companies such as Telkom Indonesia have initiated the “Digital Telco” program, which integrates connectivity services, digital platforms, and big data analytics as the main pillars of future business.

Driving Factors of Digital Transformation

Several key factors are accelerating digital transformation: the growth of mobile internet users reaching 215 million people in Indonesia (APJII, 2023), increasing demand for cloud computing services, competition from over-the-top (OTT) players, and government regulations that support the acceleration of national digital infrastructure through the Palapa Ring and Satria-1 programs.

Digital Transformation Implementation Strategy

The implementation of digital transformation strategies requires a structured approach that includes a technology roadmap, digital human resource development, and business process restructuring. According to Wardhana (2022) in his research at Telkom University, telecommunications companies that succeed in digital transformation are those that can integrate technological aspects with human aspects in a balanced way.

5G Technology Roadmap and Beyond

5G technology is the backbone of digital transformation in telecommunications. With speeds of up to 20 Gbps and latency of less than 1 ms, 5G opens up new business opportunities such as massive Internet of Things (IoT), smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) for industry. Investment in 5G infrastructure must be balanced with a clear monetization strategy to ensure optimal return on investment.

Development of Digital Platforms as New Revenue Streams

Revenue diversification through digital platforms is a critical strategy. Telecommunications companies are transforming into Digital Telcos that not only sell connectivity but also provide cloud solutions, cybersecurity, data analytics, and digital financial services. The B2B2X (Business to Business to Everything) model is becoming a new approach in the telecommunications digital ecosystem.

Risk Management in Digital Transformation

Digital transformation brings various risks that must be managed proactively. Cybersecurity risks, service disruption, and failure in technology adoption are key concerns for management. Research by Suharto & Irawan (2023) from Telkom University shows that companies with strong digital risk management frameworks have a transformation success rate 3 times higher.
